In a message dated 11-Aug-07 20:09:13 Central Daylight Time, KMATTOX at aol.com writes: It is a sad editorial that this county hospital, strategically located in a needed area of Los Angeles is closing. It was a designated Level I trauma center, so designated by the LA Health Department. Drew MLK Hospital joins other county hospitals in the United States that have closed due to political, not economic or medical school commitments. The list is impressive: Philadelphia General Hospital Charity Hospital of Louisiana in New Orleans University Hospital in New Orleans Drew MLK in Los Angeles I'm not sure about the others, but my understanding from folks who worked at Big Charity before KATRINA (and who participated in some of the Post KATRINA recovery efforts as well) is that it is literally cheaper to tear the campus down and build anew rather than trying to rehabilitate the old building to modern standards. Mention was made of pervasive mold and asbestos problems, some areas with significant mercury burden, and an antiquated HVAC and electrical system in most areas. It will be interesting to see what the ultimate fate of Big Charity is, as I suspect that there will be much fussing and feuding over it during the upcoming gubernatorial event...especially since Gov. Blanco has decided not to run again. ck Charles S. Krin, DO FAAFP ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
