Exporting an ATLS course to another country could be very expensive, and this cost will inevitably pass down to the participants... making the overall cost and course far more unattainable for the vast majority. I have been recently involved with the ITLS course here in Dominican Republic. Although ITLS is oriented towards the prehospital personnel, the principles behind ITLS, PHTLS, ATLS, etc are all the same. I do believe (shameless anecdotical promotion here) that ITLS does fill a gap in the medical education of the trauma patient here. I originally felt that ITLS would be inadequate for many advanced level providers, but soon trashed the idea after seeing that, although ITLS is not a replacement for ATLS, does give an insight when there is none. In addition, the cost is much lower, and reduced fees are also available. While not to the level of complexity of the ATLS program, I was favorably impressed by the information put out during the recent course that was held at my facility. ck Charles S.
