Interesting Post-VT Shooting Article

Finally someone has voiced what many health care workers have said over and
over. The truly psychotic can find little respite unless they are jailed
and then usually because they are so much trouble they are released early.
There is no where for them to go and precious few beds for any treatment.
Violence in the workplace is up. It has been a sad fact of life in EDs for
years. And usually these are unstable folks who have self medicated with
alcohol or drugs. Unfortunately I doubt much will be done to change
anything in the mental health community. We haven't learned from Columbine
and probably won't from VT. Instead band-aids like instant text messaging
and shooting alarms, like tornado alarms, will be instituted. I am going
to send this to the editor of our local paper and add my own opinion on our
very lacking and overburdened mental health options in our county and
state.
Thanks for letting me vent.
