In a message dated 4/18/2007 12:53:00 PM Central Daylight Time, Rgross at harthosp.org writes: Just as teachers can no longer discipline children in their classrooms for fear of retribution - either physical or legal - by "indignant" parents, I have no doubt that so too were the professors in this case handcuffed by similar concerns/fears. Good faith be damned when you are faced with the concerns of keeping your job and feeding your family, not to mention the fact that in cases just like this, you often fear for your own safety and the safety of those you care about. Sad. Very sad. what is even more sad, is that it is now coming out that the chap had been investigated for stalking at least twice, and apparently even referred for counseling. Appropriate reporting (under current federal laws, even the allegation of family violence or stalking is supposed to be enough to put a hold on firearms purchases) might have made a difference. Interestingly enough, he purchased the weapon over a month ago, so standard waiting periods would not have helped. here's a link to VA Tech's policy on the matter: http://www.trauma.org/index.php/community/list/url/http:list.ftech.net/pipermail/trauma-list/2007-April/_http://www.stopabuse.vt.edu/PDFs/(Cyber)Stalking%20Protocol.pdf_ (http://www.stopabuse.vt.edu/PDFs/(Cyber)Stalking%20Protocol.pdf) the system failed the young man...and thus failed forty odd other folks and their families... ck Charles S.
