Actually, gun laws should (and in some cases do and other do not) affect
other means to purchase a weapon such as gun shows and online purchases.

At least in Louisiana, you had to fill out a US ATF form (same one you fill
out when you buy a firearm at a gun store), when you made a purchase at a gun
show. I believe that Missouri follows the same policy.

There was usually a local LEO liaison on site to provide 'instant check'
clearance...and I know from personal experience that there were times that said
approval isn't always instant (the LEO keyed in the wrong info on one of my
purchases and I was 'denied' on Saturday)...the problem was cleared up over
night and I was able to pick up the rifle the next day.

BTW...there is no effective difference between a commercial autoloading
hunting rifle and an 'assault weapon.' Assault RIFLEs on the other hand are US
ATF Class III weapons as they have either selective (full auto) fire
capability or a short barrel (less than 16 inches), or both. And a good deer/elk rifle
with a telescopic sight is indistinguishable from a 'sniper rifle.'
