We have started here. I have been doing talks on injury prevention (road
trauma)since January 2006 (New Year resolution, nothing less !)and so far
have done free 1 hour multimedia presentations at various offices,
get-togethers, school annual days, residents association meetings etc.

My laptop sits out there in the middle of the crowded OPD showing the same
presentation over and over almost very day .(Luckily so far no one has
tried to nick it !)As you are probably aware,India tops the list at death
rates, not only because of increased accidents(too many
vehicles, pedestrians, lack of road rules etc) but also because we dont have
ATLS type training or prehospital care in over 95% of places.I did the ATLS
while in the UK, but that was in 1998.

I am also part of the World Road Safety partnership, a non-governmental
organisation which has just recently come into being. The official
inauguration is on 24th of this month. Have a look at
www.worldroadsafety.org .

Hope things will be better.

Yes, I sign up to that wholeheartedly. I accept it is 'we' not 'you'. Tell
someone they need a tetanus shot and they thank you. Tell them to wear a
seatbelt and you are lucky just to be sworn at. We as surgeons and
physicians must start in our backyards and start with prevention. Piety
about disasters in Darfur or Rwanda must take second place to telling our
neighbour how best to prevent the next belly we have to open.

Yes, WE PEOPLE, everywhere MUST do all we can in trauma prevention,
including air bags, responsibility in guns, use of alcohol, and misuse of
drugs, as
well as excess speeding etc. Together, WE PEOPLE, all of us can do
both.
