One missing note in this social Darwinian dialogue is that a well done study found that the only valid connection between personal bankruptcy and income was the amount of personal injury protection (auto insurance) required by each state. Example, HI and TN: same average income (poor) are nearly polar opposites in bankruptcy rates. HI having a $50k PIP and TN having almost $0. Duh! for trauma centers and small businesses. The most common causes of homelessness and bankruptcy are medical bills, loss of jobs (thank NAFTA), and divorce. Nearly 50% of homeless are families with children and 30% are Vietnam vets. (So much for supporting our troops). Medicare has overhead of 2-4% depending on the state's FI whereas health insurance overhead (and CEO bonuses) take 25-50% of every healthcare dollar. Medicare is not allowed to obtain drug discounts that the VA and private insurers have negotiated for years. As the spouse of a high-spinal injured trauma patient and the "queen of insurance appeals" - 70 to date and not one lost, I will attest to anyone that Medicare is a godsend and insurance companies are exact opposite. Blaming the poor for their condition is scapegoating of the worst kind.
