Actually, it is more likely that the barbed spine broke off, rather than
being ripped from the ray.  If the Australian variety is anything like
those we see locally here in S.E. USA, I can attest to the intense pain
of the envenomation.  I can't imagine how he could have not removed the
spine.

So, the ray's barb actually ripped out of his tail? Like not just
segments  
of it, but the entire sting barb? Yee-Ouch.
