Actually, it is more likely that the barbed spine broke off, rather than being ripped from the ray. If the Australian variety is anything like those we see locally here in S.E. USA, I can attest to the intense pain of the envenomation. I can't imagine how he could have not removed the spine. Regards, Bill Mastrianni, Maj.
