I truly believe that the basic courses like ATLS, ACLS, PALS, etc should be kept completely separate from the advanced procedure courses such as those for vascular, trauma, acute care and general surgeons. The audiences and purposes are totally different. At the recent ACS COT meeting much time was spent in heated discussion much of it confusing the focus and mission of the ATLS vs the surgical procedural courses. Fort the later, my own view is that the best course is the traditional general surgery residency. k
