Sad news indeed. Dr. Rothenberg was a gifted, enthusiastic, and highly enjoyable teacher. I was privileged to be one of his early AMLS students. It was probably the single richest learning experience of my long career. His loss is deeply felt. Rothenberg died on April 26 at his home in North Olmstead, Ohio. Mikel was a popular presenter at EMS Today, where he could be seen in his flashy Hawaiian shirts and providing educational, entertaining and provocative classes. He authored and coauthored several texts, including the original Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS), Why-Driven EMS Enrichment, Understanding X-Rays: A Plain English Approach, Emergency Department Standards of Care, A Lawyer's Guide and numerous articles and computer training programs. In addition to Mikel's talent as an educator, he was also known as an EMS advocate, especially in building collegial relationships with physicians, EMS professionals, nurses and other health-care providers. He always treated everyone as a necessary component of the team. He committed his professional life to improving EMS education for all. Mikel is survived by his wife Diane, two adult children, a sister and many family members, friends and colleagues. A funeral service is planned for Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at 4 p.m. at the Unity Spiritual Center, 23855 Detroit Road, Westlake, Ohio.
