The Hospital Mass-Casualty Disaster Management course prepares
non-critical care health care professionals to augment hospital
inpatient capacity, and specifically critical care capacity, in the wake
of a disaster, when resources are utilized to capacity.

The HDM course was developed to meet this disaster medical response
limitation by providing non-critical care health professionals with the
core critical care knowledge and skills needed to manage seriously ill
and injured disaster victims in collaboration with critical care health
professionals.

The HDM course includes a sequence of lectures interspersed with skill
stations. Each participant will complete a pre-course assessment, a
post test and skill station practicum. Successful completion of the
course requires a score of 70% or higher on the post test and passing
the skill station exercises.

Participants who complete this two-day course will learn basic elements
of hospital preparedness and response, including:

    * Pre-event planning and preparedness
    * Communication
    * Incident management
    * Management of limited resources
    * Rational modifications of critical care medical standards to
      provide the best chance to save the most lives.
    * Core principles for the care of seriously ill people exposed to
      infectious agents, chemicals and radiological materials.
    * Protection during such situations, with specific attention to the
      infection control needs of inpatient health care professionals
    * Hands-on training for operation of mechanical ventilators
      maintained by the SNS program of the U.S. Center for Disease
      Control and Prevention
