I believe this will also be required of Level 2 centers. I work at a Level 2 center, and to start with we have added an ETOH level to our standing trauma lab set for major traumas. If the pt is admitted, we have added an early social work/chem dep consult, but of course this is new and not everyone is doing it. As it goes on, I think the problem will be getting social work to go along with the program - this could be a LOT of people they end up seeing, and their staff numbers are dwindling. Also, where do we draw the line? Only pts admitted for major trauma? Or everyone that even comes into the ER, possibly even with very minor trauma? Hopefully when the new book actually comes out it will give us more detail about what they will be looking for. I would love to hear what everyone else is doing too...VB -----Original Message----- From: pbjorn at emh.org To: trauma-list at trauma.org Sent: Wed, 16 Aug 2006 7:19 AM Subject: Alcohol Screening According to Surgery News (Aug 06), the ACS is preparing to require Level I trauma centers to perform alcohol abuse screening and intervention for trauma patients. Do you screen and intervene? If so, how? If not, why not - and what are your thoughts on the new ACS standard? Thanks.
