Clewless, by and large

For a complete and enjoyable introduction to sailing
and its terminology, try the late Patrick O'Brian's
delightful series of sea novels, 20 in all, the first
of which is "Master & Commander," the 10th was "The
Far Side of the World." Parts of the two were
combined into a movie starring Russell Crowe a couple
years ago. The nautical terminology comes fast and
furious in O'Brian's stories, so one is wise to keep
immediately at hand a companion book of terminology by
King, Hattendorf & Estes called "A Sea of Words."
In it, you'll find that "sailing by" means heading as
closely as possible into the wind, while "sailing
large" means sailing with the wind directly at your
back.

Thus, you can sail by or you can sail large, but if
you're clewless, you can't sail, by and large.
