My take on this Is that gun laws Should be seen less as a "tool" (of questionable effectiveness) Rather more, as an "indicator" An indicator of a society that prizes individual rights to such a high level and to the proportionate detriment of the group Economicaly it as turned out to be an effective and relatively regulatable model But socially I think it has brought moral bankrupcy As, well, pointed out by the conservatives And quietly acknowledged by the Liberals By looking out for one's economic interest One raises the economic level of society ... this does not translate as well to individual interests The meer fact that we are "discussing" the right(not the privilege) to bear Handguns and Assault rifles And this In the context of continuous National Murder rates in unnaceptable multiples of other National Murder rates Is of itself a strong indicator Of how much we care more of the individual well being Than his society The right to bear arms And it's importance takes away (proportionately and indirectly) from the rights to health care, Education, And the responsibility of governments at putting more efforts into it Inclusiveness How often have I heard Americans say : "As long as I can take care of myself and my family I am fine" i.e. the rest of those people are not my problem Does not , a society, make This emphasis on individuals rights and good judgements ...indirectly Undermines the trust/dependance & obligation in the police & the judicial services (to fix disputes & differences) Deresponsabilizes the individual Like the French Moto-Crotes Vs the Swiss Canine poop bins The short term and instinctive Vs the long term & empirical Analysis is centered on the individual How can I use the laws, police, lawyers to my advantage Having more policeman everywhere (and stronger enforcement) And unconcealed weapons on all Displaced the responsability to the (other)individuals And away from the individual Who perceives himself as "himself" And not so much so, as a member of HIS society All things being equal And Americans being just like all of us Humans ! We can witness the manifestation of a(normal) societal inclusiveness response As expressed to their excellent level of "Religiousness" A fine exemple of Putting emphasis on the group's well being Albeight a selected group Again Softly discriminating to the others And we are back at it, again Charles --- Krin135 at aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 29-Apr-05 11:15:59 Central Daylight > Time, > docrickfry at aol.com writes: > All polls of police and gov't law enforcement agents > (like FBI) consistently > show most favor severe restrictions on handgun access. > The most significant > aspect of the latter is that it is these > groups--police--who are regularly on > the front lines of seeing and experiencing the horrific > and appalling rate of > gun violence in this country, unlike the armchair pundits > on this list who have > no compunctions whatever about pontificating their > "expertise" on this > matter.
