To aspire to be better than others in one's chosen field shows a total disregard for patient care???????? What moronic BS is this? The collaborative effort produces the best pt care only when the best of their respective fields collaborate,,otherwise you have a bunch of people who dont know what the heck there doing trying to come up with an answer that noone knows is the right thing to do or not,,, but even more important,,noone will know when it is the wrong thing. I cant count the number of times being politically correct and consulting well meaning internists, radiologists and cardiologists for trauma related medical problems only to be unimpressed in the management. Most common, however, is the ER staff clearing the neck of unconscious drunk patients base on some new journal they have. I will never accept that Communal Mediocrity will ever supplant the notion of a persistent drive to be correct and better and anything less is passing the buck. That being said, I would stand shoulder to shoulder with the foreign medical housestaff I had the pleasure to work with at the Washington,D.C. VA Hospital in the mid-90's...Worked like dogs just for the pleasure of saying thank you,,its all relative,,you strive to be the best,,,or you dont.. David Napoliello, M.D.
