Richard Selzer was an author of more than a half of a dozen  absolutely 
poetic books regarding surgery.   I collected all of  them.   Even the non-surgeon 
finds these essays stimulating and  insightful.    One should start with 
"Confessions of the  Knife"  
 
It is not hard to understand why surgery is indeed the very  pinnacle of the 
medical art science.
