chest tube during ED thoracotomy

This really seems obvious, but I am a nurse and maybe I'm missing something, 
but I seriously doubt it.  Penetrating thoracic injury resulting in arrest 
with thoracotomy on arrival to ED.  After thoracotomy done, a rt side chest tube 
was inserted (yes, chest still open with cardiac compression in progress).  
Isn't this simply practice? Is there some "new article" I haven't read about?
