The important thing to remember with pneumococcal vaccine is that it is the polysaccharide vaccine that needs to be given to adults not the conjugate. The poly. vaccine is 23 valent (conjugate in a 7 valent vaccine)& works best in adults. An issue with pneumococcal revaccination is that you get a hypo immune response from the booster doses (cast your minds back to vaccine immunology 101). Boosters can be given as early as three years apart, but there is a significantly increased risk of severe local (not sure about systemic) reactions. On Errington's point about the epi of invasive pneumococcal disease, here in Australia the National Centre for Immunisation Research & Surveillance (NCIRS)is collecting case data on notified cases, and several laboratories are also collecting serotype data - I think the NCIRS has published data on their findings to date, but I don't know if the serotype research has been published as yet.
