making his decision

Yes, Sal he was--of course operating when you do not have to to achieve the desired end point is never appropriate, and this player like most other sane people chose the nonop route when the whole story was laid out to him.  And of course operative removal of his spleen in no way could guarnatee return to the field any sooner or return to his previous state of function.  He was finally put on injured reserve (i.e. out for the season) (the team doc had to call a trauma surgeon from another state--God forbid we could be believed!-who agreed with our assessment that a contact sport like the NFL was not wise for this smashed psleen for at least a few months).  Altho put back on the roster the following year, did not make the cut--went to another team for that year, and eventually was cut and never made it back.
