Martyn-

I welcome your disagreement,=20

Not to suggest that only one technique is correct...........I teach the =
pure manual removal method, the "saw cut to the front piece and spread" =
method, how to pad a backboard and secure the helmet with head inside to =
a the board, and how to cut a helmet off utilizing a vacuum cast saw and =
spreader. =20

I still approach ANY helmet removal with great trepidation, for this is =
truly one instance where leaving well enough alone and taping the =
patient and helmet to a backboard may be the best route to take.

Tho I do not participate in any sanctioned racing events, I frequently =
attend the crumpled messes left in the wake of the spirited amateur =
activities on our regions highways. I have seen more than a few bikers =
injured and have attended several with serious sensory / motor deficits =
secondary to cervical spinal injuries . I left two of those in their =
helmets. Both were wearing quality full faced helmets and I decided the =
motion introduced by removal would be more than I would like. A lot of =
padding and duct tape secured them nicely to the boards, and the ER even =
left them in their helmets till the Cat-Scan was completed. The =
Orthopedic Doc wound up putting both of these chaps in SOMI =
braces..........(just short of a "halo" brace) and didn't argue with my =
field management.=20

I guess I am just an old scaredy-cat sometimes. I still leave broken or =
sprained ankles in their shoes as well............

  Matt-

A wire saw (camping dept - Wal-Mart) will remove the front of a full =
face
helmet quite handily, at low cost. BUT --------

Unless there are compelling reasons to do so (imminent airway collapse =
is
the top reason...) leave the helmet in place and let the ER doc remove =
it
  with a cast saw........

  TD

  disagree completely

my SO is a qualified ACU sector marshal ( i.e. manages a sectoor of a =
trakc
for motorcycle racers) as well as someoen who works to the the FR =
levle in
EMS provision - the most approrpaite way to remove a full face helmet =
is the
  well described manual technique

at least one major EMS provider i nthe uK has banned use of th 'hat's =
off'
device , suggesting that the approrpaite technique is the well known =
and
  well described manual method

however a power screw driver is very useful for American football and =
ice
  hockry lids
