garbled email [OT] (was Re: PA's in emergency and critical care med)

gee Dr Rick, I hope you're not so presumtuous when it comes to pt
diagnoses. ;)

the garbled message (and the one that preceded it, which had garbled
characters at the end) had a different text encoding type than everything
else that comes through on the list.  That is a parameter set by the
*sending* machine (though mail servers might be able to reset it as well).

My guess:  message that ERF replied to had a variant (probably
international/localized)  text-encoding.  That encoding was picked up by
ERF's email client and preserved  when he replied.  Those of us with macs
or certain other mail clients on other OS's were able to read the message
plain as day.

This info is available in  mail headers;  instructions for accessing them
vary by mail client.
