I don't think the point of the tax was a deterrent but more a fund raiser for the hospitals (which we fund with our taxes) to deal with enormous cost of treating these patients. People can by illegal guns now off the street what will stop them from buying bullets off the street also. cigeretts are also heavily taxed yet people keep smoking. Taxing is a poor option to deter anything. Education of the proper use of guns and enforcing the gun laws that we have on the books are the best options. > > >In a message dated 4/14/2002 10:07:47 PM Eastern Standard Time, > >tabi@caribe.net.mx writes: > > > > > >> Number of gun owners in the US: > >> 80,000,000. > >> Number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups): > >> 1,500. > >> Accidental deaths per gun owner: 0.0000188 > >> > >> Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more > >> dangerous than gun owners. > >> > >> > > > >This is a very typical underhanded distortion of the true picture--note the > >use of "accidental" category, which of course accounts for a limited, small > >and stable number of gun deaths each year--why not talk about the great > >overwhelming majority of gun deaths each year making up the full 30,000 plus > >deaths each year from guns, most from homicides and suicides--the very same > >people who tend to slickly avoid this issue are usually the same ones > >pushing for law and order and getting the "perpetrators", yet somehow forget > >about the thousands of homicides from firearms every year--now why is that???? > >ERF > > Even if we go by the 30,000 plus that ERF uses as the number of gun deaths each year it still ends up being 0.000375 deaths per gun owner. This still is better than the death to doctor ratio. > > Dan Murphy > EMT-I > > _____________________________________________________________ > -------------------------- > GET THE HOTTEST CONTENT & FEATURES > Pre-Register Today for Firehouse.com MembersZone > http://www.firehouse.com/members/ > ------------------------------- > Get Your Own Free E-Mail! > Firehouse.Com > The Web's Community and Resouce for Fire, Rescue and EMS > http://www.Firehouse.Com > ---------------------------------- > Shop Today for Everything Fire/Rescue/EMS > From Books, to Tees, to Checks & Code 3 > http://www.firehouse.com/shop/ > > -- > trauma-list : TRAUMA.ORG > To change your settings or unsubscribe visit: > http://www.trauma.org/traumalist.html
