Hi all; I am currently looking at various trauma services and the variety of ways to run one for a level 2. Could you please email me which type of program is run at your level 2 hospitals? We are currently undergoing a surgeon shortage and need to quickly find a different approach. Do you use PA's to do the initial assessment? or just follow the patient inhouse? What is the current practice nationwide for PA's and trauma? I know some are trained in trauma and are used in a variety of ways. Would you use some for a level 2? What are the benefits/disadvantages. Same goes with FNP's , not to do initial assessment stuff, but running the day-to-day stuff, handling the 2am phone calls for pain meds etc. What about locum tenems? What about hiring independent surgeons (2) to take the call and be the primary surgeons, w/back up from local surgeons for vacations, illnesses etc. We currently share a joint medical staff w/another level 2 in our area. Any ideas about that? Please email me at: mbarnum@asante.org with any ideas you have. Thank you for the help! Mary Barnum RN, BSN, CEN Trauma Coordinator.
