Tabi, et al:

Back up just a bit. Break it down:

G.C.S.
Glasgow (this word is, for whatever you might make of it, functionally
irrelevant).
Coma (Un-consciousness).
Scale (Measuring device).

Use it for describing coma (chemically-induced or otherwise), and marking
trends in same. Pretty simple, if you let it be.

One note: PARALYSIS is not coma, and therefore the GCS cannot apply to the
assessment, trending, or evaluation of folks who are paralyzed.

Still beats the daylights out of AVPU.

Regards,

Pret Bjorn

Hello to all:
As far as I know the GCS score is intended to be used ONLY in trauma.
It is not to be used in patients who have any other thing, as overdoses or
alcohol...or sickness,, and only as an ongoing evaluation tool.
And thank you for pointing out that below 8 we SHOULD consider intubation
(I agree that my kids would have to be intubated most of the time)
Some ER doctors will try to trip us, specially the new ones, asking about
the GCS in an obviously intoxicated patient
Keep safe!
