Hyperventilation causes a reduction in cerebral perfusion. It is, there=
fore, effective in reducing intacranial pressure (that is the reason wh=
y it has been recommended). However, the reduction in cerebral perfusio=
n may be detrimental for underperfused brain areas; newer studies showe=
d that immediately after brain trauma cerebral perfusion may be already=
 low - thus, it is now state of the art to normoventilate TBI patients.=
