Dr. K,
As a patient, I found compazine to be my drug of choice for an =
anti-emetic. Unfortunately, this drug is not available in the IV because =
of the manufacturer.
I was given Phenergan once, in IM and it worked well. I also see this =
first hand when it is given alone for nausea.
Zofran is another wonderful option. However, costly.
In respect to the habits of the practitioners that continue to order =
Demerol and Phenergan I do I agree, poor.
I question it relentlessly, and it usually gets me the option to manage =
with MS or Dilaudid and no anti-emetic approximately 50% of the time.
What suggestions can you offer to win the other 50%?
Laurie Grimes RN
Washington

It has never been intended to mix phenothiazides with opiates. Their =
time of action is different and any nurse or doctor that mixes =
"phenergan" and "morphine" just does not understand their pharmacology. =
Phenergan is a terrible anti-emetic, as a matter of fact, it just does =
not work, at least from my own personal experience, as a patient. =
There are a list of reasons as long as ones arm why Phenergan and =
Morphine should not be given at the same time. In my own opinion, for =
this hospital, such ordering habits are a sign of a poor doctor and an =
unquestioning nurse.
