Please. I enjoy and appreciate the List, and enthusiastically recommend it to friends, colleagues, and students. But this volume and degree of nonsense is an embarrassment not only to the forum, but to each and all of us who claim to be serious thinkers. For better than ninety per cent of Trauma-List subscribers, I'm certain that this is thread is abject spam. And honestly, for half of the remainder, I suspect that it provides mere compensation for an inability to engage debates of actual clinical merit. Dr. Mattox is fond of observing that language is a strategic target for those who would undermine a culture. For those who would challenge him, I give you this very thread: under a relentless barrage of hyperbole and nit-picking, the air has been sucked out of the bunker, and whatever quivering thought was sheltered within has suffocated. Sound and fury, signifying squat. Four days later, I'm no longer confident of what a "professional" is; but I'm hoping that it turns out to be someone who can interpret context, weigh significance, tolerate distraction, resist recrimination, and appreciate the importance of other perspectives to his or her field of interest, and to an enlightened society. What are the chances we could put this thread away before the New Year?
