Two runners who also happened to be = doctors assisted with CPR. The St John Ambulance bike team (volunteer = first responders) were the first team to respond and successfully = defibrillated the patient with a Laerdal Heart Start FR. You can see = more info on the St John Ambulance NSW website. Cheers, Didier St John Ambulance Australia Divisional Superintendent Granville Division ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Enid and Adam Robinson=20 To: trauma-list@trauma.org=20 Sent: Tuesday, August 13, 2002 7:50 PM Subject: Sydney City to Surf Hi all, August 11 saw the annual charity Sun Herald City to Surf Fun Run. = This is run as a NSW Disaster exercise each year, where medical teams = from all over NSW attend and put into action the NSW Displan. It = includes volunteer organisations such as the St John's Ambulance service = and the State Emergency Service, as well as paid organisations including = the Health Department and the NSW Ambulance service. This was my third = year, and it was a glorious winter day at Bondi Beach - 28 degrees C, = blue sky, blue sea and good company. This year there were more than = 60,000 runners. We watched the elite runners come in and then spend 2 = hours flat out treating dehydration and hyperthermia - some of which = needed to be taken to hospitals when temps didn't come down after = following protocols. Very successful day with no deaths (usually one = arrest each year) and over 3,000 people treated. Anyway, on the subject of untrained bystanders - one 70 year old male = arrested on Heartbreak Hill (approx 8 kms uphill) and was resuscitated = by other runners who stopped and commenced CPR until the ambos arrived, = defibed, and transported him to hospital, where I understand he is = recovering!! Looking forward to next year.
