Description Cook County Trauma Unit treats 5,000 Level 1 trauma patients per year. 40% of these require surgial intervention by the trauma service or other surgical subspecialties. 450 laparotomies and thoracotomies are performed annually. The trauma unit has its own 16 bed critical care unit which admitted 650 patients last year and treated more than 40 multiple organ dysfunction patients. Our new trauma unit has opened. This facility includes two major resuscitation rooms with built in X-ray, a ten bed resuscitation and evaluation area and a 16 bed critical care area. The trauma service also participates in the critical care management of our hospital's burn patients.
   
Research activities
The division of trauma supports a full time research program staffed by 1 or 2 research fellows and a research nurse. Clinical and basic science protocols ar established and on-going.
 
Fellowship Program
Clinical responsibilities The fellowship provides exposure to injury prevention, trauma systems responsibilities planning, education of prehospital personnel, resuscitation, in-depth surgical experience, critical care, rehabilitation and trauma registry functions.
   
Research opportunities The clinical research fellow is expected to participate in research activities and produce at least one peer reviewed publication.
   
Teaching resposibilities
The fellow will participate in daily teaching rounds which include the intake discussion as well as intensive care rounds. In addition, the fellow will give a monthly lecture to the residents and medical students on a trauma or critical care topic.
