Description The Canberra Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Centre
It is a Sydney University teaching hospital and a 550-bed tertiary referral centre. We serve a population of 500,000 and an average of 300 major trauma admissions both from A.C.T. and N.S.W., of which 7% are pædiatric trauma.
A well established helicopter retrieval service is just off campus

Clinical responsibilities

The successful applicant will be able to:

  • Prioritise and coordinate the acute resuscitation and treatment of the multiply injured based on EMST,ATLS principles.
  • Coordinate acute care between multiple services
  • Be familiar with the operative and nonoperative management of life and limb-threatening injuries
  • Be responsible for the ongoing care and co-ordination with other specialities in management of the trauma patients in ICU, the wards, as well as,
  • Involvement in the organisation of appropiate rehabilitation.

 

  • Attendance at all trauma calls between the hours of 0800-1700hrs Monday to Friday in conjunction with the General Surgery carrying the trauma code page.
  • Undertake aeromedical retrievals during working hours (0600 - 1800hrs) as required.
  • Tertiary Survey on all trauma patients admitted to ICU/wards in the previous 24hrs.
  • Liaise with surgical registrar or, if required, directly with trauma surgeon in an unstable polytrauma patient.
  • Daily review and management plan of all in-patients
    admitted to ICU/wards following notification of a trauma code or trauma alert; in conjunction with the " home team".
  • Assistance in discharge planning and follow-up management of selected patients with complex injuries in an outpatient clinic .
  • Monthly teaching forum focused on trauma management.
  • Teaching responsibilities for residents, medical students and running scenarios for other trauma members.
  • Research interest and Quality Assurance activity with a focus on the retrieval service and activities of the Shock Trauma Service including regional education.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
   
Research opportunities Excellent opportunities exist for involvement in clinical research with experienced staff. Involvement in the revision and/or development of trauma management, F.A.S.T. protocols, as well as participation in regular auditing is considered mandatory.
   
Teaching resposibilities
The trauma fellow/registrar will be actively involved in the conduct of weekly education programmes for medical and paramedical services and will be responsible for the supervision of residents and interns clinically involved in the trauma pathway/service . Participation in local and interstate trauma conferences. The unit is closely aligned with University of Sydney, Canberra Clinical School and teaching courses include EMST, BSS, ELS,APLS.
 
Certifications  
Salary Fellowship/ Registrar level - subject to A.C.T award and applicant qualifications
Applicant requirements

Year 4 and above Advanced Trainee in I.C.U/ Emergency Medicine/Anęsthesia or General Surgery
Completion of EMST, ATLS or equivalent.

Retrieval experience (some), FAST credentials, Careflight prehospital training course, APLS, DSTC (if trainee in General Surgery) are desirable criteria

The Trauma Fellow/Registrar must have a genuine interest in maintaining the highest standards in trauma care, demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills and have the ability to work as a team member.
