700 bed tertiary care hospital that is the primary teaching
institution for |

the
University of Pennsylvania Undergraduate and Graduate Schools
of |

Medicine.
Within the hospital, there is a 56 bed Surgical Intensive
Care |
|
Unit
that has 2,300-2,500 admissions annually. There is a 3 bed
dedicated |
|
Trauma Resuscitation area within the Emergency Department,
through |
|
which
1,200 patients a year are admitted to the Trauma Service,
50% of |
|
whom
have suffered blunt injuries. Between 400-500 major operative
|
|
trauma
cases are performed yearly. More than 95% of these are |
|
performed
by Fellows and surgical housestaff with close faculty |
|
supervision
and direction. |
|
|
|
Faculty
support is provided by 8 full time dedicated surgeons with
special |
|
training
and interest in Trauma and surgical Critical Care and is |
|
supplemented
by faculty from the Department of Anesthesia with special
|
|
qualifications
in Critical Care. |

Traumatology and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the
Hospital of |

critically ill surgical patient. The Fellowship provides exposure
to all |

aspects
of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care and furnishes opportunities

for
teaching, administration, and research. |

Our
Fellowship takes place in an atmosphere of academic and clinical

|
excellence
that provides constant challenge, guidance and mentorship.
It |

fully
prepares the graduate to function with advanced skills suited
for either |

an academic or community setting. |
