Description 450 bed hospital, with 4,200 trauma admissions per year (60% blunt, 40%

penetrating)



The trauma center is a self-contained unit with a dedicated nursing staff

separate from the Emergency Room. There are four operating rooms in

the trauma center that are dedicated only for trauma and emergency

surgery. Outside of these there is an 18 bed intensive care unit only for

trauma patients. There is an additional 6 bed neurosurgical ICU.
Research activities Ongoing research projects are looking at hemorrhagic and septic shock.

Experimental designs are directed at both pathphysiological mechanisms

in these states as well as therapeutic modulations. During this second

year, the fellow takes call 5 nights a months in order to maintain clinical

skills and perspectives.
 
Fellowship Program
Clinical The first year of the fellowship is entirely clinical. The fellow has primary
responsibilities responsibilities in the trauma intensive care unit and also participates in

resuscitation in the admitting area. The fellow is on call every third night

and during those times participates in operative procedures.



The fellow rotates for 2 monthsto the regional burn center and the pediatric

intensive care unit.
Research The fellow has independent responsibility for a minimum of two clinical
opportunities prospective research studies. The second year of the fellowship is for

basic research. The fellow also follows up on the prospective trials which

they intiated during the first year of the fellowship. The 2,200 square foot

laboratory is equipped as an intensive care unit with four separate stations

for procedures. A gamma camera, HPLC and flow cytometer are

available.
Teaching The fellow is responsible for organising a weekly trauma conference.
responsibilities There are monthly multi-disciplinary critical care conferences currently

spnsored by pulmonary medicine, pediatric intensivists and trauma

surgery.
