| Description |
Lincoln
Medical and Mental Health Center is a Level I state-designated
Trauma Center with approximately 1500 trauma admissions (35%
penetrating, 65% Blunt). Lincoln has the reputation of having
the city's busiest Emergency Department. The Fellowship Program
is fully accredited by the ACGME and candidates who successfully
complete the program may become Board Eligible in Surgical
Critical Care. Fellows spend nine months on critical care
rotations and three months on our Trauma Service. The Department
of Surgery maintains a general surgery residency program.
The Medical Center is also affiliated with The New York Presbyterian
Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, where Fellows have an opportunity
to spend three months of critical care electives under the
direction of Dr. Philip Barie. |

Research
activities
|
All faculty
are actively engaged in retrospective and prospective research
projects. The primary focus of the faculty is on projects
devoted to trauma and surgical critical care.

Program |
| Clinical
responsibilities |
The
Fellows rotate through various critical care areas including
Lincoln's 10-bed state-of -the-art Surgical Intensive Care
Unit. He/She is expected to take a leadership role on rounds
and to participate actively in all patient management decisions.
The SICU team consists of a Critical Care Surgical Attending,
three residents, two physicians assistants, and Cornell medical
students. The Fellow is administratively responsible for the
weekly didactic critical care conferences, and is automatically
appointed to the SICU Committee and the Trauma Research Committee.

| Research
opportunities |
All Fellows are encouraged
to develop clinical or basic science research projects that
are suitable for publication in academic journals. Such projects
may be carried out at either Lincoln or The New York Presbyterian
Hospital. Assistance with obtaining grants is provided. Opportunities
are available for an optional research year. |

|
Teaching
resposibilities
|
Fellows are expected
to teach the Department's general surgery residents and rotating
Cornell medical students. Forums that exist for didactic interchange
include our weekly Critical Care Conference, biweekly Trauma
M&M Conference, and informal teaching sessions at the bedside. |
