The philosophy of the critical care training program is
that a hands-on, direct patient care approach provides the
optimal learning experience. The unit is staffed by surgical
critical care fellows and general surgery and emergency
medicine residents. Medical and physician assistant students
are also assigned to the service. Call is taken in-house
on an every third night basis by all members of the Critical
Care Service. A graded level of responsibility is assigned,
as the fellows become accustomed to the goal directed protocols. The
fellow gains excellent experience in clinical management,
problem solving, and bedside procedures (including endoscopy).
The second year trauma fellow is a junior faculty member
of one of the trauma services at ORMC. The trauma fellow
rotates with other faculty members in call responsibility
with approximately one night per week of in-house call.
In addition to honing skills in the surgical management
of trauma, the fellow participates in administrative and
quality improvement aspects of the trauma center, to round
out their preparation to function as a leader in trauma
systems upon completion of the fellowship.
