The
U K Chandler Medical Center, Lexington, is an urban based,
ACS verified, Level 1 trauma center situated in central
Kentucky. The metropolitan area population is 250,000. The
medical center is the primary referral hospital for a 49
county rural service area of central and southeastern Kentucky.
The
medical center supports a medical school and has a residency
training program in all medical specialties. The Section
of Trauma and Critical Care directs the Trauma & Emergency
Surgery Service, the surgical critical care service, the
nutrition support service and the aeromedical program. The
6 general surgery residents assigned to the trauma service
are divided into 3 person teams that take call every other
day. The surgical critical care service provides consultative
services for critically ill patients from the Division of
General Surgery and the Department of Surgery. One general
surgery (PGY3) and two anesthesia residents (PGY1, PGY2)
are assigned to the service. The nutrition support service
functions in a manner similar to the surgical critical care
service.

| Clinical
responsibilities |
The
2 year fellowship is structured to provide a clinical experience
for trauma care (all phases) and general surgical emergencies,
as well as the management of the associated critical illness.
The fellowship also provides exposure to the administrative
aspects of trauma and critical care.
The
fellowship consists of one year of clinical practice and
one year of clinical and basic science research. Clinical
rotations will include exposure to nutrition support, trauma
radiology and ultrasound. Nightcall will be every 3-4 nights
from home.
