The
surgical intensive care units at Boston University Medical
Center and |
|
Boston
City Hospital have a total of 28 surgical beds and 20 step-down
|
|
beds,
admitting, each year, over 1500 patients with multiple trauma,
|
|
neurotrauma,
and multisystem organ failure, as well as patients with a
|
|
wide
range of general, vascular, thoracic, urologic, neurologic,
and |
|
orthopedic
diseases for perioperative hemodynamic monitoring and care. |

The
Critical Care Fellowship offered by the Section of Critical
Care |
| responsibilities |
Medicine,
Department of Surgery at Boston University Medical Center
is |
|
an
ACGME accredited clinical fellowship that provides rotations
in the |
|
surgical
intensive care units of Boston University Medical Center and
|
|
Boston
City Hospital. In addition, elective rotations in burns, neonatal,
and |
|
coronary care units are available. The Critical Care Medicine
section is a |
|
multi-disciplinary
service staffed by physicians certified by the American |
|
Board
of Surgery, Internal Medicine, and/or Anesthesia. Applicants
should |
|
be board eligible in surgery and licensed by the state of
Massachusetts. |
|
|
|
|
|
Two-Year
Trauma/Critical Care Fellowships are available to board eligible
|
|
candidates
in general surgery. In addition to a year of Critical Care
|
|
training,
the Fellow will devote exclusively twelve months to the care
of the |
|
severely injured patient to develop the skills for operative
and |
|
non-operative
therapy of trauma victims, and the organization and |
|
administration
of trauma care systems including prehospital care and |
|
transport
in cooperation with Boston Medflight, the air evacuation system
|
|
serving
the northeastern region. The Fellow will be involved in clinical
|
|
and/or
basic science research related to trauma and critical care. |
|
|
|
One
Year-Critical Care Fellowships are available to candidates
who are |
|
board
eligible in surgery, anesthesia, cardiology, or pulmonary
medicine. |
|
The
Fellow will develop skills in the care of the critically ill
patients and in |
|
the
administration and management of intensive care units. |
